by Ilias Hatzakis - Friday, 3 November 2006, 11:56 AM

Dear friends,

I would like to warmly welcome you to this forum in which we will together prepare and  support (in a free and relaxed way smile ) the distant seminar on e-business that will take place in 10 days from now (13-17 November) between Athens, Berlin and Sofia.

This forum will be moderated by Jochen Dietz (Free University of Berlin) and myself (GRNET).

The participants of this forum are:

The 6 trained tutors + Phillip Ivanov and Rossitza Petrova from ISTF + Stanislava Ezekieva from SAITC + professor Pantelis Aggelidis + Ljubomir Zhivkov and Harriett Hoffman (FUB) + Vassiliki Giannikopoulou (GRNET) + the 2 coordinators of the next seminars (in Tirana and Skopje).

The main aims of this forum are to

 · Get to know each other

· Find out the expectations of the training

· Find out what is your current level on informatics/ e-business/ e-learning

· What questions/problems should be discussed during the seminar

So please, as a first step, it would be nice if you could all introduce yourselves (something outside the formal CVs that you have kindly sent) and write a few words on the rest of the questions.

I wish you a pleasant and fruitful work.

Ilias Hatzakis
ELISA coordinator

As one of the moderators of this forum I'd like to set a good example and start with a short presentation of myself:

My name is Jochen Dietz, I'm 32 years old, an university trained teacher for economics orientated vocational schools and working currently at the Freie Universität Berlin within two projects:

1. Project FUeL, which aims at implementing e-Learning at the Freie Universität Berlin. I'm consultant of the economics department and contact person for all questions around e-Learning and the central learning management platform Blackboard.

2. Project ELISA, which you (hopefully) already know. Together with my colleagues from Berlin we are responsible for the evaluation of the learning management platform Moodle and that you all gain lots of usable (e-Learning) experiences before, during and after the train the trainer seminar.

Before this job, I was an academic research assistant at the Universität Leipzig (Chair of Business Education and Educational Management) and worked together with pedagogues, business economists and computer scientists on the development, implementation and evaluation of an online e-Commerce course. And before that I worked as an ad viser for Electronic Data Processing and Information Technology at the Eastern German Savings Bank Academy in Potsdam and was responsible for the according educational training program, including calculation, marketing, organization, coordination and evaluation.

Apart from my working life, I’m spending quite a lot of time with my son (playing football !) and the rest of my free time I’m surfing the internet, and reading books.

If you’ve got any further question to me, my life and especially to e-Learning, Moodle, deployment scenarios etc., please don't hesitate asking any question. I’ll try to answer within a few hours.

Hi everybody,
My name is Nikolay and currently I am an assistant professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. I have some e-learning experience  since 2002 through the Sun’s Academic Initiative (SAI), a collaborative program between Sun Microsystems and academic institutions. As a part of this program our faculty becomes authorized to deliver training on Sun technologies. In addition, Sun provided as with free access to selected online courses through the Sun Learning Center. 10s to Sun Microsystems, I am teaching my courses in a “blended learning” model. In practice “blended learning” model is a flexible term that means different things to different people.I hope this forum is good host to find out what people in training and development currently understand by the term “blended learning” - and to hear about work that is currently being done. Who drives the use of technology in learning?

Hi, dear colleagues.

My name is Olya Harizanova. At present I am associate professor at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski and I teach ICT in Library and Information Sciences Department. My basic courses are Web design and Automated Information Systems. I have a second position as a director of the Center for Educational Services. (CES is a service oriented unit of Sofia University whit main goal to ensure the necessary organizational and methodological conditions for parallel and continuing education, specialization and re-qualification of learners from various spheres of social practice.)

From 8 years ago till now I research the status of IST in different Bulgarian sectors (education, business, telecommunication, libraries ...). My last publications are “Readiness of the Bulgarian SMEs for the Information Society” and “E-readiness and E-activities of the Bulgarian SMEs (Results of empirical research)”.

Now my special interests concern Bulgarian Libraries as Information Society Centres of Knowledge but as before continue research SMEs in Bulgaria and their ICT-level, their readiness to participate in the e-market and possibilities to create e-business.

My expectations of the training are to know more about e-learning platform (teaching methods, how to publish new materials…) and some differences from other platforms.

Wish you pleasant  day,

OH smile

Hi everyone,

my name is Ljubomir Zhivkov, I am studying macroeconomics at the Economics Department of the Free University of Berlin. I came to Germany as a student in 2001 after studying business administration for 2 years at the Sofia University. I’m looking forward to seeing people again who I already know as lecturers from the “St. Kliment Ohridsky”-University. Now I’m almost finished with my study in Berlin. I’m currently writing my diploma paper about my native country, Bulgaria.

I have collected much experience in e-learning during my work in Berlin. I’m part of the university’s e-learning team which supports all departments and faculties and maintains the e-learning platform “Blackboard”. We are also maintaining the university’s content management system, which is the main internet presentation tool of the Free University Berlin.

Additionally, I work on the Elisa-project. When I first heard about it in march 2006, I decided to take part in it, because of the project’s strong focus on the East-European countries, which Bulgaria
belongs to. I’m very happy to feel like being connected to Bulgaria on this "strange" way.

I’m looking forward to the seminar week, when I can meet everyone of you personally.

Ljubomir Zhivkov

Wow! I'm realy impressed from your rapidness in presenting yourself. Thanks. I take this as a great interest from you all in the upcoming teleseminar and (hopefully) in Moodle. So let's go a bit further and talk about e-Learning or, how Nikolay stated, blended learning. Do the others have any hands-on experience in e-Learning or blended learning? Have you been working with a Learning Management System like Moodle? Do you agree with Nikolay that blended learning is a “flexible term that means different things to different people”? What is your opinion?

Greetings from Berlin

Jochen

Hi everyone.

In my opinion Jochen Dietz questions concern most important area in modern teaching. I have experience in e-learning from my courses (Web design and Automated Information Systems) and that's why I agree with Nikolay Netov (“blended learning” model).

Actually in Sofia University we use e-learning platform Arcade (http://62.44.100.133:8080/arcade/index.jsp). From my experience for me more important question now is how to prepare e-learning materials for all students (different basic knowledge; different interests; different necessity; different places) in a short time and response to their needs. May be answer is in the new methodology to create learning subject for new education technologies. For me the possibility is to create precise learning modules and give students an opportunity to select content according to their necessities. Web access platforms are a good way for that, but … what about technological possibility to exploiting them, how we can decide possibility for Internet access, motivation, prices...?

For one example, in Bulgaria:

- 31% of citizens have Internet connection (high-speed connection - 26% (mainly in Sofia)), but others are excluded from the information society for different reasons – low income, settlements without appropriate communication infrastructure, not suitable education or because their job does not require the use of such communication means.

- 58% of businesses have Internet connection (high-speed connection – 44%), but approximately 98% of all firms are SMEs.

For second example, in Bulgaria:

- Small proportion of libraries has computers (30% in total); only 14% have Internet access and only 11% have high-speed connection.

- On average: one library has 0.6 PC for the staff with Internet access and 0.4 PC with high-speed connection, one library has 0.2 PC for readers/visitors with Internet access and per one library 0.2 of the staff have access to e-mail.

So, what you think about facts and possibilities for Web access in e-learning context?

  Dear Olya,

During the last summer-term at my university I've visited a course which topic was "the aspects of European integration of the former communist countries" and especially the access to the information society "from the west". During this seminar I've heard about a comparing study which results showed, that Bulgarians are at one of the first places between many other east-European-Countries of using an Internet access.

I would like to give You a funny example also. This summer I visited a small village near the Border with Turkey ( Village named "Кости" (in Bulgarian), very small one with population ca. 150 people). This village is situated even almost behind the border. At almost every house in this village there was a cable internet access provided by a local internet firm.

So, I will generally agree to you that unfortunately there are many people and even firms who cannot have internet access because of the reasons which you described, BUT my idea is that the data you provided will be very very different in two or three months due to the falling prises of the internet access solutions. Soon we will reach the point (and I'm quite sure about that), when more than 50% of the people and more than 70% of the SMEs are going to have internet connection. And NOW is the very moment for us to prepare for it.

All the best

Dear Ljubomir,

Thank you for notes. I agree with you that my data is really “different in two or three months due to the falling prices of the internet access solutions” and that “NOW is the very moment for us to prepare for it”.

The data I provided are from our research “Survey and Analysis of the Consumer Driven Demand for Telecommunication Services in Bulgaria” (September – December 2005) (Zhelyu Vladimirov, Olya Harizanova, Krastu Mirski).

Particularly:

- The proportion of firms with Internet connection (our research - total 58%) is lower than the registered by the last report “E-Bulgaria” (between 70 and 82% of the businesses and 78% of the computers there has Internet connection as of January 2006). This difference is due to the high proportion of micro-firms in our sample (63%). It needs to be pointed out that the proportion of micro-firms of all businesses in Bulgaria is nearly 91%. To illustrate the above: according to our survey 79% of the businesses (without the micro-firms) have Internet access, while 77% of the SMEs (without the micro-firms) have Internet access. In total, 44% have high-speed connection, without the micro-firms the proportion raises to 56%. The proportion of SMEs (without micro-firms) with high-speed connection is 55%.

But however, in my opinion it is important to understand that the Internet availability (connection) is a firs step; the second step is utilize Internet (how citizens and firms utilize Information society, how they use online service). That’s why you are right; we must be ready to the second step.

  Dear Tutors,

as the teleseminar is approaching I'd like to focus the aims of this forum, stated from Ilias:
· Get to know each other
· Find out the expectations of the training
· Find out what is your current level on informatics/ e-business/ e-learning
· What questions/problems should be discussed during the seminar

We all presented ourselves, so we tick the first point off. Nearly all of you are working in some higher or lower level within the IT- and e-Business sector and at least two of you have experience with e-Learning. So we can also tick the third point off. But still missing are your statements to the other two points.

So please keep in touch by using this forum.

Jochen

  Dear all,

I will totally agree with Jochen.
It is very important for all of us, who organize the upcoming seminar and collect its content to really know what your expectations of the training are. So please feel free to tell us your statements to the other Ilias' topics !

  Hi everybody!
I would like to share with you my current thoughts and expectations regarding the seminar and the project.
I have no experience with distant learning up to now and it will be very interesting to me to form my own opinion, for the different advantages and disadvantages of this type of learning.

As for the project - I hope that we will not just make the seminars for the SMEs. I think that me and my co-tutors should goal that these seminars put the foundations of a network for collaboration between our university and the respective small businesses. I also expect that the Serbian tutors will share with us their preliminary expectations and the actual results from the trainig sessions for the SMEs in Serbia, coupled with their respective comment for the unexpexted pitfalls or unrealized expectations.

See you on Monday!
Have a nice weekend!

  Hello everybody,

I hope you can excuse me for my delay to join to the current discussion. First of all, I am going to introduce myself and try to give a short answer to the essential questions that were stated by Mr. Hatzakis.
My name is Kiril Kasev and I am currently a Ph.D. student working in the area of communications.
I can imagine that we will get more familiar with the current trends in the e-business/e-learning technologies evolution during the distant seminar on e-business and thus we can apply the acquired knowledge in the process of training small and medium-sized enterprises.
As I can see, the project is based on the Moodle e-learning platform, which I have basic knowledge on, and hope I will extend it during the seminar.
About the questions and problems that should be discussed during the seminar, I think they will be actual when different thinking participants get together at the training session.

Finally, I am glad we can meet each other and have a good training session!
